Unit 5 · Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude Paper 1 · 29 June 2025 Morning

Two identical containers P and Q contain mixture of milk and water in the ratio 1 : 1 and 3 : 1, respectively. In what ratio should mixtures be taken out from P and Q so that milk to water ratio becomes 5 : 4 ?

Correct answer: B. 7 : 2

Explanation

Milk fraction in P = 1/2 and in Q = 3/4; the required mixture has milk fraction 5/(5+4) = 5/9. By alligation, P : Q = (3/4 − 5/9) : (5/9 − 1/2) = (7/36) : (1/18) = 7 : 2. Check: taking 7 and 2 parts gives milk = 7(1/2) + 2(3/4) = 5 and water = 4, i.e. 5 : 4. Hence the ratio is 7 : 2.P
