Unit 9 · People, Development and Environment Paper 1 · 13 October 2022 Evening

Given below are two statements
Statement I: Photovoltaic cells are often made up of crystal silicon.
Statement II: Photovoltaic cells are also made up of inexpensive amorphous silicon, which is like ordinary glass and has no crystal properties.
In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Correct answer: A. Both Statement I and Statement II are correctकथन I और कथन II दोनों सही हैं

Explanation

Most commercial solar cells are indeed made from mono- or poly-crystalline silicon, so Statement I is correct. Thin-film cells are made from amorphous silicon, a cheaper non-crystalline form whose atoms are randomly arranged like those in ordinary glass, so Statement II is also correct. Hence both statements are correct.
